Shortly after captaining the side to victory over Southampton, Everton full-back Seamus Coleman admitted it was an ‘honour’ to lead the Toffees out in the Premier League.
Marco Silva started life at Goodison Park with a 2-1 victory over Mark Hughes’ Saints side, with goals from former Southampton star Theo Walcott and summer signing Richarlison.

Coleman was handed the armband by new boss Silva in the absence of suspended defender Phil Jagielka, who picked up a controversial straight red card on the opening weekend draw against Wolves.
Talking to BT Sport after the win, the Irishman, who returned from a broken leg during the second half of last season, couldn’t hide his delight at leading the team out at Goodison Park and is hoping for plenty more success with the Toffees.
I have my own standards, with or without the armband, but it is a big honour to captain this club at any level and I am very proud to do it in the Premier League.
We wanted to start at home as we mean to go on.
The fans were looking forward to the new regime, a new manager and new players, and we needed to put on a show, which I thought we did.
Coleman looks set to keep hold of the armband when Everton travel to Bournemouth next Saturday as they search for back-to-back Premier League wins.
