It’s a very cruel world. There are plenty of evil things that happen and not a lot of good to offset those bad things. One of those principle bad things that happens is the Merseyside Derby.
They aren’t fun, and as I realised last year, I went through the entirety of secondary school without ever seeing Everton win a derby, and to be honest, as much as I want to believe it will, I can’t see that changing for a while.
Marco Silva will need to overhaul this squad, more-so than he already has, to be rid of a loser mentality at Anfield that has existed since 1999. However saying that, only three players who started last year’s Anfield derby will be lining up come the first whistle on Sunday:
Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jordan Pickford and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
That turnaround in a year’s time is extraordinary but also shows just how sorry a state we were last year.
And just before I go to the team, as I write this, it’s one-year to the day of Sam Allardyce’s appointment as Everton manager.
Happy anniversary.
