The first half was a whole lot of Everton. Despite Newcastle taking the lead early on through a quick break, not once did they look like they would hold on to that slim margin. From the off, Richarlison, André Gomes, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Cenk Tosun dominated Newcastle.
What was the most impressive part about the first 45 is that, while we were superior in absolutely every aspect of the game, we were not content with just large amounts of the ball and every player actively looked forward for the ball.
André Gomes once again stole the show as he made the midfield his own.
However it ended up being a very frustrating second half as we failed to kick on, even with possession figures hovering around 78% for large parts of it. Sigurdsson was taken off in a very odd substitution and that confined us to a point at best, with no creativity amongst the front 4 present.
It happens, see you all again on Monday
Love from, Alex.
Jordan Pickford - 6
Not much to do at all beyond picking the ball out of his net early on.
Séamus Coleman - 6
Coleman went against the grain this evening as he was the only player who seemed hesitant to drive on with the ball and launch an attack.
And even more freaky, he looked very solid defensively.
Yerry Mina - 6
It’s hard to grade the defence tonight as they really didn’t have to do much
However, in such situations, it’s vital that they remain alert for whenever they are called on, and they couldn’t early on as Newcastle snatched a goal
Kurt Zouma - 6
Zouma owned the air tonight as he shut Salomon Rondon down for large portions of the game.
Lucas Digne - 4
Digne’s first poor game had to come eventually and here we are.
His distribution tonight was abysmal, and while being absolutely fine defensively, that doesn’t count for much against these teams.
Idrissa Gana Gueye -5
Didn’t really have to do much, seeing as, you know, we didn’t lose the ball.
He was sort of there just twiddling his thumbs.
André Gomes - 8 (Man of the Match)
Gomes was certainly not okay with a point tonight as he showed the gulf between a world-class midfielder and a relegation-level Premier League side tonight as he was absolutely untouchable in the middle.
However his teammates couldn’t elevate themselves to his level and found themselves reaching for any balls he put through that would have set us off.
Gylfi Sigurdsson - 6
Weirdly brought off midway through the second half, Gylfi struggled to break down a ten-man defence or craft any shooting opportunities.
Ademola Lookman - 5
I pray that nobody will write Lookman off for a poor-ish performance against, like I mentioned, a ten-man defence.
Richarlison - 7
Richarlison put in his most physical and gritty performance tonight as he threw his weight around remarkably well considering he was up against a strong backline, and he was rewarded with a goal that we sadly did not kick on from.
Cenk Tosun - 4
I will remain positive about Cenk Tosun for now, but he really did not do himself any favours tonight as he looked off the pace all evening.
There isn’t much more to it, he just wasn’t at it tonight and it’s not a good look for trying to convince Mr Silva that he doesn’t need another striker.
Bernard – 4
Slotted in to an ineffectual attack and didn’t improve it.
Theo Walcott – 4
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – N/A
