Everton are thought to be closing in on a €30 million move for Mainz midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin – so will Idrissa Gueye’s departure turn out to be a blessing in disguise?
According to French outlet Soccer Link, cited by Sports Witness, the Toffees have acted quickly following Gueye’s move to Paris Saint-Germain and look set to complete a deal for the Ivory Coast international to Merseyside in the coming days.
Gbamin looks set to fill the void left by the impressive Gueye for the foreseeable future, with the 23-year-old regarded as a star of the future by many in the Bundesliga.

It’s easy to see why many rate the versatile midfielder so highly. Gbamin can play as a centre-back and a holding midfielder, two positions Everton are desperate to bolster ahead of the new campaign.
He’s tall, energetic and extremely strong and looks set to into fit Marco Silva’s side with ease.
The Ivorian is good both on and off the ball and is well disciplined, qualities needed to perform in a holding midfield role at the top level.
Gbamin also boasts an excellent passing rate and received just three bookings for Mainz last season, an impressive record for a player in his position.
The player’s imminent arrival could prove that Gueye’s departure is actually a blessing in disguise.
The Senegal international was an excellent servant at Goodison Park during his three-year stint on Merseyside, however, replacing a player who will turn 30 in September for an impressive youngster who has his prime years ahead of him could be an excellent move by the Toffees.
