Sigurdsson prepares personal targets – Can he beat last season’s goal tally?

Gylfi Sigurdsson has laid out his targets for the 2019/20 season ahead of Everton’s opening Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace.

The Iceland international regularly jots down his own personal targets before hiding them in his training ground locker. Ahead of a pivotal season where Gylfi is expected to feature heavily, the attacker is gearing up to do so again.

Speaking to the official Everton website, Sigurdsson said about his personal targets:

I will probably write down my targets on the way to the Palace game or in the hotel the night before.

They are dependent on the previous season. Loads of different things go into deciding them – they won’t be too different from the goals I set myself last season but you always want to improve.

They are always in my locker, so I see them every day.

Sigurdsson also confirmed that the Toffees are ready for the game at Selhurst Park, with Marco Silva’s men targeting a European qualification spot this season at least. Gylfi continued:

We feel ready for the first game this season.

Pre-season is about the hard work – building a training load and preparing to make sure you are ready for the first game and everything beyond.

We would have liked to have scored more goals in the friendly games but training is the most important thing in that period.

We have added quality and strengthened the squad for this season.

The Club is committed to improving and we have a lot of competition for places, which is healthy for the team.

It’s great news to see that Gylfi is always striving to improve. Through several periods last season, I doubted that Gylfi was the answer to whatever questions the club were asking, but I hold out hope that he can kick on and find a more consistent level this season.

On his day, Gylfi is one of the most influential and creative players in the Premier League, and I’m sure all Everton fans are crying out for more consistency.
