Silva wants to experiment with tactics – how could Everton set-up against Lincoln?

Marco Silva has revealed that he could experiment with Everton’s formation following the return of Fabian Delph to fitness.

Silva revealed yesterday that Delph was passed fit to feature against Lincoln City, should he so choose to play him, and talking to the Liverpool Echo the Portuguese boss revealed that he could elect to experiment with the way his side is set-up.

With Delph seemingly set to make his debut for the club this evening, Silva could look to operate with a 4-3-3 system against the League One side, as opposed to Everton’s usual 4-2-3-1 system.

This new shape could help sharpen Everton’s attack force, with goals hard to come by so far in the new campaign. Talking about changing things around, Silva said:

It will be a possibility, no doubts about that, and Fabian – not just because of this – he is a left-footed player but this is important for me because last season we didn’t have a left-footed midfield.

Last season we didn’t have many left-footed players in the squad but he can give this for me, playing in a 4-3-3. It is one of the possibilities for us to play in some games in this system because it is something I like to do and can give us different solutions.

In this system you could give more freedom to the midfielders but it is also possible you don’t give so much freedom for your full-backs, depending on your idea and strategy for each match.

You know our full-backs are normally really offensive and so if we play with just one midfielder in some moments it is possible they are not so offensive.

It depends on the moment of the team, it depends on many, many things but I agree with you, it could give more of a solution upfront but, in the meantime, we have to be more balanced with our full-backs.

This is certainly interesting to hear from Silva. Everton have sometimes found themselves caught in the trappings of the more modern formations like 4-2-3-1, and the opportunity to be more expansive with a 4-3-3 is interesting indeed.

Particularly with the forward options at Everton’s disposal, most of whom are pacy and powerful, it could be really positive to see Everton operate in a different manner.
