Kean nominated for Golden Boy award – can he win?

Moise Kean has been nominated for the 2019 Golden Boy award.

Awarded annually since 2003, the Golden Boy award is given to the Europe-based player under the age of 21 who has most impressed in a respective calendar year, from the end of one season to the beginning of the next.

Matthijs de Ligt and Kylian Mbappe won the award in the previous two years, while Wayne Rooney and Raheem Sterling are the only English winners.

Rooney won the award in the calendar year where he played for both Everton and Manchester United.

Kean is on the 40-man shortlist for the 2019 edition of the award, having impressed for Juventus before making the switch to the Premier League this summer.

With Moise Kean receiving a nomination, it is another indication over the quality that the Italian forward possesses. Everton have yet to fully see it in action, but it is undoubtedly there.

The former Juventus man is unlikely to win the award, with players such as De Ligt, Jadon Sancho and Joao Felix nominated, while the two with the most votes currently (at the time of writing) are Abdulkadir Omur and Kang-in Lee.

From the perspective of the club, it is more coverage that the club receive for being a project that is aiming to develop bright young talent. While Kean may not win, it is positive for Everton to see one of their players nominated.
