David Unsworth has explained the reasoning behind handing Harry Charsley a short-term contract to remain at Everton this season.
The Republic of Ireland youth international was announced among Everton’s released list in the summer, with the 22-year old leaving the club following the expiry of his contract.
However, the midfielder has remained with the club over the last few months, having initially trained with Unsworth’s Under-23s side before featuring for them in the Premier League 2.
Unsworth has now confirmed to the Liverpool Echo that Charsley was handed a six-month contract until January, and it was due to the boyhood Evertonian still being in the recovery stage after sustaining a serious back injury last season.
Talking to the Echo, Unsworth explained Everton’s stance of protecting their youth, claiming that the club aren’t willing to simply abandon a young player when they need support. Unsworth said:
Harry’s been with us since he was five or six. Unfortunately, towards the end of the season, he sustained a serious injury—a stress fracture of his back. We felt it was the right decision to give him a contract until January to get fit and stay fit. We’re on smaller numbers than we have been over the last couple of years so there’s an opportunity to increase his profile and get himself a club in January.
Charsley has now featured five times for Unsworth’s side as they bid to retain their Premier League 2, having won their second title last season.
Unsworth has challenged Charsley to work hard to put himself in the shop window for other clubs to take notice in the winter window. Unsworth continued:
It’s something I’m proud our club does. We don’t just chuck young players we’ve invested a lot of time and coaching with by the wayside just because they’re injured.
That’s a responsibility I will always take because it’s the People’s Club. This is what we do. We do it properly. Myself, Marcel and the club felt that was the right thing to do and Harry and his agent were absolutely delighted as you can imagine.
He’s a great lad as well. When you’ve had a lad who’s done absolutely everything for your team and your club for more than ten years you’ve got to look after them and do what’s right.
You’ve got to do the right thing and we do the right thing by our young players and our young players never let us down.

I’ve said it before but as much as Everton’s on-field performances try to make fans hate them on a weekly basis, the club is just so special that you can’t help but be so proud of what they stand for.
This situation is reminiscent of the Jose Baxter situation from recently too, where the Toffees re-signed the former academy starlet after his drug issues to help him get back on his feet. I love that the club are willing to go to bat for those who have come through their ranks, and it is something I can’t imagine many other clubs if any doing the same.
Of course, there will always be a worry about wasted resources on someone who will not feature for the club in the long-term. However, so long as it is minimal, I love seeing the club show everyone else how to care about its players.
