Everton appear to be firmly in he hunt for a new right-back in January after transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the Toffees’ interest in Lille defender Mehmet Zeki Celik.
The Turkish international’s agent was contacted by Everton representatives ‘weeks ago’ according to a tweet posted by the journalist, although Ancelotti’s side face heavy competition from Italy.
Roma have opened talks with the agents of Mehmet Zeki Celik [Lille] as right back, after Bryan Reynolds deal stalling [Juve and Brugge always interested]. No official bid yet. Also Everton were in contact with his agents [weeks ago]. 🇹🇷 #Roma #Lille @DiMarzio @SkySport

The tweet from Romano claimed that Serie A side AS Roma have opened formal discussions about bringing the right-back to the Italian capital. However, it is indicated that Everton have had some form of communication with the player’s entourage.
Only 32-year-old club captain Seamus Coleman and out-of-favour academy product Jonjoe Kenny are natural right-back options, meaning that a need to strengthen that position is inevitable at some point.
Ligue 1 side Lille are cash-strapped and need to raise funds through player sales after French broadcaster Mediapro defaulted on two of their broadcasting rights payments. Celik is currently valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, although any final fee or bid range for the 23-year-old remains unclear.

In a relief for Everton fans, Romano confirmed that there has been no official bid from Roma for the player.
That could come as a consolation; whilst Everton may superficially look to be dithering on a move, it may be that the Toffees wish to take their time and explore their options.
Coleman is certainly the wrong side of 30, and it seems Everton are taking the smart approach of trying to identify suitable alternatives to their loyal club servant.
