Everton urged to sign River Plate’s Santiago Sosa

South American talent expert David Webb has urged Everton to sign River Plate starlet Santiago Sosa.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has been strongly linked with the Toffees despite having made only 21 senior appearances in his native Argentina.

Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, Webb believes it will become easier and more promising for British clubs to recruit in South America following a realignment of work permit rules in sport.

Maria Patsalos, a partner at Mishcon de Reya and specialist in immigration law, claimed that the rules will make signing lower-league EU talent tougher, but could open up talent recruitment in other continents.

Webb duly picked out Sosa as an example of a young talent who could be ready-made for the Premier League and could be able to qualify for a work permit with relative ease. The former Tottenham recruitment expert told Sky Sports:

[Sosa is] attracting a lot of attention at the moment. He’s a central midfield player that, in the transfer window prior, was heavily linked with Everton and it was looking likely that they would sign him.

He’s a player that could come in and play now. He’s still only young and needs time to develop but he would definitely be in contention as a potential starting player, especially for an Everton or Southampton – those aspiring teams looking to break into the European places. He could fit in well at either of those teams.

Another South American football expert, Tim Vickery, also recently hailed Sosa, describing him as an ‘old-fashioned’ midfielder with a robustness which could serve him well in English football.

With recruitment laws changing, taking advantages of such opportunities is a must for any Premier League club. Adapting to new recruitment tactics is a good starting point, and expanding recruitment in South America is a shrewd future-proofing move.

In that sense, trust in the experts. Sosa could grow exponentially as a footballer and could be an ideal prospect for clubs like Everton.
