Kevin Campbell, who scored 47 goals in an Everton shirt, has endorsed a move for Southampton star Danny Ings – but claimed a tactical tweak may be required.
The Sunday Mirror (via PressReader) has previously claimed that Everton have joined a host of Premier League suitors keeping in the loop on the status of the Saints striker, who is out of contract next summer.
3-cap England international Ings has mustered a commendable Premier League tally of 12 goals and 4 assists this season despite moments of struggle with injury, accounting for over a third of his team’s goals.
The ex-Burnley and Liverpool man could make a switch from the red to the blue half of Merseyside via the south coast according to the Mirror, and Campbell feels a move for the 28-year-old boasts some merit.
Speaking to Goodison News, the ex-Toffees marksman claimed:
“[Ings] would be a good signing for Everton, definitely.
“I think he can [play with Dominic Calvert-Lewin], I definitely think so. I think there could be a little change of formation, like a 4-4-2 or probably a 3-5-2, because you’ve got to get the best out of the front boys.
“To get the best out of the front boys, and Danny Ings especially, you’ve got to be able to give them decent passes and you don’t really get that unless you’ve got someone really dedicated to that, like James Rodriguez, who would be closer to them where he could slip balls in.
“You’d also need two full-backs who can deliver good crosses but you need athleticism at the back, and they could get that if they could get another centre-half. Holgate is athletic but I don’t think he’s good enough on the ball.”

Ings was non-committal when quizzed over recent links to other Premier League sides such as Manchester United and simply chose to reiterate how he intends to honour and focus on his existing deal.
That could bode well for Everton if their interest is real – but do the Toffees need another striker?
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has remained largely fit and been in fine consistent form for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
His 16-goal tally was pivotal in Everton’s successes and was rewarded with an England call-up to Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad.
Unless Ancelotti opts to rigidly stick to a two-striker system, it is hard to see Ings being adequately accommodated.
