- Everton are just 3 points off Liverpool, who are fifth in the table
- Everton have picked up more points than Liverpool in 2026
Everton’s 3-0 demolition of Chelsea on Saturday was more than just three points. It was a massive statement. David Moyes’ side moved to within three points of their neighbours Liverpool, who suffered a surprise defeat at Brighton on the same day.
With seven games remaining and a Merseyside derby still to come at Hill Dickinson Stadium, the unthinkable is starting to look possible.
The Toffees have now won six of their last eight home league meetings with Chelsea, but it is the prospect of finishing above Liverpool that has caught the attention of pundits and supporters alike. Tony Cascarino, speaking on TalkSPORT, believes the balance of power on Merseyside could be shifting.
Cascarino: ‘I Wouldn’t Be Surprised’
The former Republic of Ireland international was unequivocal in his assessment of Everton’s rise under Moyes. “Do you know what? I wouldn’t be surprised if Everton finish higher than Liverpool,” Cascarino said.
He pointed to Everton leading Liverpool this year. “I’m not being disrespectful to Everton, they have got more points in the Premier League in 2026 than Liverpool. There’s only a one point difference but Everton have 18 and Liverpool have 17.”
The stat means massive for Everton and David Moyes. A team that spent the past two seasons fighting relegation has outscored the defending champions in 2026. Cascarino highlighted how David Moyes has turned the tide for Everton.
“Everton didn’t have a squad even close to Liverpool at the start of the season! We’d have sat here and gone ‘Do you know what Everton might topple Liverpool’ and Liverpool are in front at the moment and might well end up (finishing higher). But even to consider a race between the two of them… Everton have done brilliant!”
Everton masterclass at Hill Dickinson
Cascarino credited Moyes with navigating a challenging first season at Everton’s new home. “David Moyes has done an incredible job at dragging his team, going into, by the way, a new stadium. Yes, they’ve not had European football, but I’m looking at Everton and thinking, they could finish in front of Liverpool.”
The Toffees have found their rhythm at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Saturday’s performance against Chelsea was their most complete display since moving from Goodison Park. The crowd played its part, creating an atmosphere that rattled the visitors and inspired the home side.
Liverpool will travel across the city on matchday 33. By then, the gap could be even smaller. The Reds have lost 10 Premier League games this season for the first time since 2015-16, while Everton have lost just once in their last six matches. Can the Blues keep the momentum going ahead of the derby?
To finish above Liverpool would represent a massive achievement. It is no longer a fantasy but a genuine possibility.
