  • The Hill Dickinson Stadium will host its first Merseyside Derby this Sunday.
  • An historic moment and Everton will be desperate to close gap on their rivals.
  • Danny Mills believes it could be a special match for the resurgent Toffees.

Everton’s historic move to Hill Dickinson Stadium will experience another first this weekend as the Blues welcome bitter rivals Liverpool to their new home for the first time.

The Blues have experienced teething issues in their first season on the waterfront and have struggled to generate any impressive form.

But their last home match against Chelsea showcased what their ground looks like when in full flow.

Now the Blues face Liverpool, and former Premier League defender, Danny Mills, thinks it could be a memorable match for Evertonians.

Danny Mills sees Everton getting one over on Liverpool

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Mills gave his thoughts ahead of the big fixture and noted that the Toffees could take advantage of the under-pressure Liverpool side.

He said: “The atmosphere at Goodison was always exceptional.

“So how does that translate to a new stadium? I think the good thing for Everton is in recent years, Liverpool have been so far above them, it was almost a bit one-sided at times.

“Now this is a real opportunity, Everton can close the gap to a couple of points, they’re on a bit of a slide Liverpool, so if they go to the Hill Dickinson and lose, and then suddenly Everton go we’re only two points behind now.

“There’s a lot more pressure on them [Liverpool], I think this could be special for the Everton fans.”

Mills’ son, Stanley, was contracted at Everton between 2018 and 2025, and made two appearances for the men’s side in the League Cup.

New stadium, same fixture

Everton can boast a pretty impressive record against Liverpool at home, and while they should have picked up more wins in recent years, they usually make it hard work for their rivals.

Sunday’s match will feel different, but the circumstances around the Merseyside Derby have not changed.

The Toffees will want to prove they are the pride of the city, just as they do every time they face Liverpool.

And now the world has seen what Hill Dickinson Stadium looks like in full voice, the players can be reassured that if they fight for every ball and commit themselves to the challenge, passionate support from Evertonians will follow.
