- Everton play Man City in their penultimate home match of the season on Monday.
- Toffees are in need of at least a point to maintain their push for European football.
- Have not beaten City since 2017 and will need to put in a special performance.
Everton will square up to Manchester City this Monday in a bid to keep their European football aspirations alives.
While the Blues seek to return to Europe for the first time since 2017, City are hunting for another domestic treble.
David Moyes has stated his side has made credible progress this season, but gaining qualification to Europe is still a priority.
If the Toffees are to achieve their target, they will have to recreate performances such as these.
Maarten Stekelenburg at the double
Maarten Stekelenburg arrived on Merseyside in 2016 and only made a handful of appearances in his four years at Everton.
He featured 19 times in the Premier League during his first season with Ronald Koeman, and did not play in the league again until he left in 2020.
The Dutchman’s most iconic moment for the Toffees came against Man City, when he saved two penalties in one game, and helped his side claim a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
Tom Davies schools the City midfield and a dream debut for Ademola Lookman
Everton encountered Man City in January 2017, just a week after getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester City.
The mood was low in the royal blue, but they responded perfectly by thrashing Guardiola’s side 4-0.
It was a match that saw a young Tom Davies run the show from midfield and sensationally chip Claudio Bravo in the City net, and Ademola Lookman score the Blues’ fourth in a debut of dreams for the winger.
Darron Gibson haunts old cross-city rivals
Darron Gibson was one of the many successful pieces of business Everton have signed from Manchester United.
He transferred to the Blues in the January window of 2012, and made an immediate impression with them, where the midfielder did not lose a single lose game with the Toffees in his first season at Goodison Park.
In the same month that he signed for Moyes’ side, he thumped Everton to a 1-0 victory against the eventual Premier League champions, and handed City just their third league defeat of the season.
“Just f***ing hit it!”
This particular match in March 2013 was shortly after a shocking home FA Cup quarter final defeat against Wigan Athletic.
But the Toffees roped their supporters back in with a memorable 2-0 win against City who were reigning champions at the time.
Leon Osman opened affairs with a thunderous strike from outside the box, but Nikica Jelavic sealed the win from a counterattack.
The game has become iconic amongst Evertonians, with a famous clip of the Croatian’s goal, being complemented by a supporter shouting, “just f***king hit it!”, to which the striker did, and with it secured three points.
Demarai Gray silences the Etihad
Everton went to the Etihad Stadium on New Year’s Eve of 2022, when they had just achieved 14 points from 17 Premier League games.
After conceding midway through the first half, it seemed like a nailed on victory for the hosts, until Demarai Gray had his say.
With Frank Lampard’s men clinging on, they soared into their opponents third, and just as it looked like Gray might hold up the ball to relinquish pressure, he opted to go himself and beautifully curled the ball past a hopeless Ederson, and snatched Everton a valuable point.
