Everton captains ranked: The 10 greatest leaders in the club’s history
  • Everton have had dozens of captains throughout their 147-year history
  • Success, leadership, longevity and legacy all influenced these rankings
  • One leader from Howard Kendall’s golden era remains the benchmark

Few football clubs possess a history as rich as Everton’s.

League titles, FA Cups, European nights and some of the game’s most iconic players have all helped shape the club’s identity. Through every successful era and every difficult period, one figure has carried greater responsibility than most: the captain.

The armband at Everton has been worn by legends, trophy winners and players who embodied the values supporters cherish most.

Ranking them is never straightforward, but based on leadership, achievements, influence and legacy, these are the 10 greatest Everton captains of all time.

10. Duncan Ferguson (1994-1998, 2000-2006)

Few players connected with Everton supporters quite like Duncan Ferguson.

Although his captaincy spell was relatively brief, his passion, commitment and willingness to carry the club during difficult periods made him a natural leader. Ferguson remains one of the most popular figures in modern Everton history.

9. Phil Neville (2005-2013)

Neville arrived from Manchester United carrying significant expectations.

He quickly became one of David Moyes’ most trusted lieutenants, captaining Everton during a period of remarkable consistency. His professionalism and leadership helped the Blues establish themselves as regular challengers for European qualification.

8. Phil Jagielka (2007-2019)

One of Everton’s most dependable modern players, Jagielka inherited the armband during an important period for the club.

A leader by example rather than words, he anchored Everton’s defence for more than a decade and remains one of the finest centre-backs of the Premier League era.

7. Mick Lyons (1970-1982)

Often overlooked outside Merseyside, Lyons was one of Everton’s toughest and most respected defenders.

He captained the club during a challenging era and remains remembered for his uncompromising style, consistency and leadership.

6. Alan Ball (1966-1971)

Already a World Cup winner when he joined Everton, Ball brought elite standards and a winning mentality to Goodison Park.

His influence extended far beyond his own performances, helping drive Everton to the First Division title in 1969/70 before taking on the captaincy.

5. Dave Watson (1986-2001)

Watson’s longevity alone earns him a place on this list.

The commanding centre-back captained Everton through much of the 1990s and lifted the FA Cup in 1995, making him the most recent Everton captain to lead the club to a major trophy.

For supporters of a certain generation, Watson was the captain.

4. Seamus Coleman (2009-2026)

Coleman’s story is one of the greatest in Everton’s modern history.

Signed from Sligo Rovers for just £60,000, he developed into an outstanding Premier League full-back and eventually club captain. While silverware has eluded him, few players have represented Everton with greater dignity, humility and commitment.

As the club transitioned into the Hill Dickinson Stadium era, Coleman remained a symbol of what Everton supporters expect from their captain until his departure in May 2026.

3. Dixie Dean (1925-1937)

Dean’s goalscoring record alone would guarantee legendary status.

However, his influence extended far beyond finding the net. As captain, he became the face of Everton Football Club and remains one of the most significant figures in English football history.

Nearly a century later, his legacy still defines the standards Everton aspire to reach.

2. Brian Labone (1958-1971)

Known affectionately as “Mr Everton”, Labone embodied everything supporters admire.

Elegant, composed and universally respected, he captained Everton to league and FA Cup success during the 1960s and remains one of the club’s most revered figures.

If leadership is measured by respect, few captains can rival Labone.

1. Kevin Ratcliffe (1980-1992)

No captain in Everton’s history has a stronger claim to the top spot.

Ratcliffe captained Howard Kendall’s legendary side during the most successful period the club has enjoyed in the modern era, lifting two First Division titles, the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Yet silverware alone does not explain why he ranks first.

Ratcliffe combined authority with humility, consistency with excellence and leadership with selflessness. Team-mates trusted him, supporters admired him and opponents respected him.

When Evertonians think of a captain lifting trophies, many still picture Ratcliffe.

More than 40 years later, he remains the standard against which every Everton captain is judged.

Who could join this list next?

Everton’s move into the Hill Dickinson marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s history.

Future captains will have the opportunity to write their own legacy, but the challenge is considerable.

The men on this list did not simply wear the armband.

They helped define what it means to be Everton.
