Everton supporter Andy Burnham secures emphatic Makerfield by-election victory
  • Long-time Everton supporter Andy Burnham has returned to Westminster today.
  • The Greater Manchester Mayor secured victory in the Makerfield by-election.
  • Burnham’s links with Everton have remained strong throughout his career.

Evertonians are used to seeing Andy Burnham in the headlines.

Whether attending matches, speaking about the club or reflecting on Everton fortunes, the Greater Manchester Mayor has never hidden his affection for the Blues.

Now, the long-time Everton season ticket holder has another achievement to add to his name after winning the Makerfield by-election and securing a return to Westminster.

Burnham recorded a comfortable victory in the constituency on Thursday, finishing well ahead of his nearest rival and earning a place back in Parliament after almost a decade away.

While the political ramifications of the result will dominate national coverage, many Everton supporters will know Burnham first and foremost as one of the club’s most prominent fans.

Familiar face among Everton supporters

Burnham’s connection to Everton stretches back decades.

Unlike some public figures whose football allegiances only emerge occasionally, Burnham has consistently spoken about his support for the club and has regularly attended matches over the years.

He has shared in the frustrations and celebrations that come with following Everton and has often spoken about the role the club has played in his life.

That support has remained visible during some of the most significant moments in the club’s recent history, including the farewell to Goodison Park and the move to Hill Dickinson Stadium.

For many supporters, Burnham is not simply a politician who happens to support Everton. He is an Evertonian who has maintained a high profile on the national stage.

Another notable moment for a high-profile Blue

The by-election victory represents another significant chapter in Burnham’s public career, but it is also a reminder of Everton’s presence beyond football.

The club’s support stretches across politics, business, entertainment and sport, with Burnham among the most recognisable Evertonians in public life.

At a time when much of the conversation around the club centres on transfers, fixtures and preparations for the new season, his victory offers a different talking point for supporters.

There is no direct link between events in Westminster and what happens on the pitch under David Moyes, but stories like this often resonate because they highlight the people connected to the club away from football itself.

Burnham’s attention will now turn to his new role in Parliament, but Everton supporters will undoubtedly continue to follow the progress of one of the club’s most well-known fans.

And when the new Premier League season gets underway, few would be surprised to see him back in the stands supporting the Blues once again.
