Former Everton winger Anders Limpar has urged the club to continue strengthening David Moyes’ squad in January despite the uncertainty surrounding The Friedkin Group’s ownership.
TFG announced earlier this month that it was exploring new investment options for Everton, including the potential sale of a controlling interest, less than two years after completing its takeover from Farhad Moshiri.
Limpar, part of the Everton side which won the FA Cup in 1995, admits he was surprised by the development but believes recruitment must continue as the club attempts to build on its progress under Moyes. Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the former Sweden international said Everton needed greater squad depth and argued that strengthening in January should remain part of the club’s plans.
Limpar wants Everton to keep building
Everton underwent significant changes to their squad during the summer, but Moyes is still working with relatively limited numbers and has already spoken about the importance of having his players available for selection. Limpar believes that leaves room for further additions when the transfer window reopens, regardless of the uncertainty surrounding TFG’s longer-term position.
The owners have not indicated that the investment process will result in Everton reducing their support for Moyes. In announcing the review, TFG said its focus would remain unchanged and that it would support the club “in all ways necessary to achieve success on the pitch”.
There is also no guarantee that the process will lead to a change of control. TFG is considering a range of investment options and has appointed Moelis & Company to advise it, with any potential sale of a controlling interest only one possible outcome.
For Limpar, the football priority is to keep building. Everton have made an encouraging start under Moyes, but the former winger believes further January recruitment would give the manager greater depth as the season develops.
