Moyes makes Everton pledge and issues rallying cry amid ownership uncertainty

David Moyes has promised it will be “business as usual” at Everton and urged supporters to make their presence felt against Chelsea amid uncertainty over the club’s ownership.

The Friedkin Group announced last week that it is exploring new investment options, including the potential sale of a controlling interest, less than two years after completing its takeover.

Moyes admitted at the time that the development had surprised him. He has now addressed the situation again, insisting that events off the pitch will not distract his players from their immediate task.

Moyes sends message to Everton supporters

Writing in his programme notes ahead of the Chelsea game, Moyes acknowledged the significance of the ownership news.

“During that spell the sports news agenda was dominated by one story,” he said.

“You don’t need me to tell you what that was, but for all of us here, by far the biggest story was that our owners have publicly declared the Club is up for sale.

“All I can tell you supporters is that it will be business as usual for the coaching staff and the team.

“We will continue to work as hard as we possibly can and whatever happens off the pitch will not distract us from our job of trying to win football matches.”

Moyes then issued a rallying cry ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

“You have helped us in the past in difficult moments and with today’s lunchtime start, your backing could be hugely influential – just as it was in last season’s corresponding fixture.”

It’s a familiar message from Moyes, who knows from both his spells at Everton how influential the relationship between the team and its support can be.

With questions over the club’s ownership unlikely to disappear quickly, his message before Chelsea is straightforward: the focus inside Hill Dickinson Stadium must remain on the football.
