Everton face Coventry City in the Premier League on Friday night, renewing a fixture that has not been played competitively for more than 25 years.
The clubs first met in 1910 and have played each other 80 times, with Everton holding the better overall record. But Coventry proved difficult opponents during the Premier League years, winning twice as many of their meetings as the Blues.
Friday’s game at Hill Dickinson Stadium will be their first competitive encounter since January 2001.

The first meeting took place in the FA Cup on 5 March 1910, when Everton won 2-0 away from home.
The clubs became regular opponents following Coventry’s promotion to the First Division in 1967, meeting twice a season for much of the next three decades.
Coventry had the better Premier League record
Everton won just three of their 18 Premier League meetings with Coventry between 1992 and 2001. The Sky Blues won six, with the other nine games ending in draws. The Blues’ only home league victory over Coventry during that period came in April 1999, when they won 2-0 at Goodison Park.
Coventry won the last meeting at Goodison, beating Everton 2-1 on Boxing Day 2000. The Blues gained revenge less than a month later with a 3-1 victory at Highfield Road on 20 January 2001. That remains the most recent competitive meeting between the clubs.
Everton’s biggest wins against Coventry
Everton’s record victory in the fixture came on 26 November 1977, when they beat Coventry 6-0 at Goodison Park. Another emphatic result followed in September 1980, with Everton winning 5-0 at Highfield Road.
The clubs also met in the 1987 Charity Shield at Wembley. Everton, the reigning First Division champions, beat FA Cup winners Coventry 1-0. More recently, Coventry won a pre-season friendly 3-0 in July 2024, although that result does not count towards the competitive head-to-head record.
Friday’s meeting comes with Everton seventh in the Premier League after successive victories over Newcastle United. Coventry, back in the top flight this season, are 16th after nine matches.
