Everton and Newcastle United renew a cup rivalry stretching back 120 years when they meet in the Carabao Cup fourth round at the Hill Dickinson on Thursday.
Knockout meetings between the clubs have been relatively rare, but there have been some significant ones. Everton’s first FA Cup triumph came against Newcastle, while the sides’ only previous League Cup encounter required extra time and penalties.
Everton and Newcastle share memorable cup history
The biggest meeting came at Crystal Palace in April 1906, when Alex Young scored the only goal as Everton beat Newcastle 1-0 in the FA Cup final. It was the Toffees’ first success in the competition and remains the only time the clubs have faced each other in a major final.
There was another important Everton victory much later in 1995. Joe Royle’s side beat Newcastle 1-0 at Goodison Park in the FA Cup quarter-finals before overcoming Tottenham in the last four and Manchester United at Wembley, securing what remains the club’s most recent major trophy.
Newcastle did enjoy some revenge around the turn of the century, including a 4-1 FA Cup quarter-final victory at St James’ Park in 1999. Three years later, however, Everton returned to the north east for what remains the clubs’ only previous League Cup meeting.
That night in November 2002 produced considerably more drama. Kevin Campbell put David Moyes’ Everton ahead before Newcastle responded, and the contest eventually finished 3-3 after extra time.
Everton held their nerve in the shootout, winning 3-2 to progress from a six-goal thriller at St James’ Park. The EFL has highlighted that meeting in its build-up to Thursday’s fourth-round tie.
Almost 24 years on, the clubs finally meet again in the competition. Everton have never lost a League Cup tie against Newcastle, while the Magpies arrive having reached the quarter-finals in each of the previous four seasons.
