When Everton face Chelsea at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, it will be the 197th competitive meeting between two clubs whose rivalry stretches back 119 years.
Chelsea won the first encounter 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in October 1907, while Everton’s first victory arrived at the fourth attempt with a 3-2 win at Goodison Park in March 1909.
Chelsea hold the advantage across the previous 196 meetings, with 78 victories to Everton’s 60 and 58 draws. The balance has been very different on Merseyside in recent years, however, with Everton winning six of the past nine home Premier League meetings.
Saturday brings the sides together again with both on 10 points after six league games and Everton one place above Chelsea in fifth.

Everton have enjoyed some emphatic wins
Everton’s history against Chelsea contains several heavy victories, including a remarkable 7-2 win at Goodison in November 1931 when Dixie Dean scored five times in the opening 32 minutes.
The Toffees won the First Division title that season and another championship-winning Everton side beat Chelsea 5-2 in March 1970, with Howard Kendall scoring after only 14 seconds.
Everton’s biggest victory by margin came in April 1978, when Gordon Lee’s side won 6-0 at Goodison. Bob Latchford scored twice during a season in which he finished with 30 First Division goals.

Chelsea have found Merseyside difficult
Chelsea’s overall advantage in the fixture became more pronounced during the Premier League era, particularly as the London club established themselves as regular title challengers.
Trips to Everton have remained difficult, though, and Chelsea have won only one of their past nine away Premier League meetings with the Toffees.
Everton have won six of those nine games and drawn two, while Chelsea have failed to score in seven of them, including their past three visits.
The sole Chelsea victory during that sequence came in August 2022, when a Jorginho penalty secured a 1-0 win at Goodison.
Hill Dickinson already has its own Chelsea memory
The move from Goodison brought a new setting for the fixture last season, but Everton did not have to wait long for a significant result against Chelsea at their new home.
Beto scored twice and set up Iliman Ndiaye as David Moyes’ side won 3-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium in March, Chelsea’s heaviest defeat away to Everton since October 1987.
It was also Everton’s biggest Premier League victory over Chelsea and ended a run of four league meetings without a win against the London club.
Saturday will be Chelsea’s second competitive visit to Hill Dickinson, with the visitors attempting to avoid successive Premier League defeats against Everton for the first time since 2019.
