Everton 3-1 Newcastle: Toffees march into Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Everton produced a clinical cup performance to beat Newcastle United 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson and book their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored the goals for David Moyes’ side, who responded impressively after successive Premier League defeats without scoring.

Everton make their moments count

Newcastle made the brighter start and forced Jordan Pickford into action, but Everton struck first after 34 minutes. Tyrique George’s pressure helped win possession before Hackney found Garner, who curled an excellent finish into the bottom corner.

Everton doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time with a devastating counter. Pickford started the move before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall drove forward and Barry eventually crossed for Hackney to guide home his first goal for the club.

Newcastle introduced Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa at the interval and applied plenty of pressure after the restart. Everton held firm, though, before another clinical break effectively settled the tie midway through the second half.

Garner won possession and released Dewsbury-Hall, whose low delivery found Barry inside the area. The striker took a touch before firing home to make it 3-0, with Dan Burn’s 89th-minute header proving no more than a consolation.

It was an impressive response from Everton on a night when Jack Grealish was unavailable because of a breach of club discipline. More importantly, a side who had struggled for goals suddenly found three of them when it mattered.

Fleetwood Town now await at Highbury in December, with Everton one victory away from their first League Cup semi-final since 2016.
