Jordan Pickford could equal Peter Shilton’s all-time England appearance record at a World Cup when he starts against Mexico in the last 16, with kick-off at 1am BST on Monday at the Azteca Stadium.
It would be Pickford’s 17th World Cup appearance for England, matching Shilton’s mark. Mexico have won all four of their matches at the tournament without conceding, and have not lost at the Azteca in their last six matches there, a stadium sitting at 2,200 metres above sea level.
Pickford has also faced Mexico striker Raul Jimenez regularly in the Premier League, conceding six goals to him, more than any other forward he has faced.
Pickford was beaten at his near post in England’s 2-1 win over DR Congo in the last round, though Thomas Tuchel has given no indication his position as first choice goalkeeper is under threat. Dean Henderson and James Trafford remain unused on the bench.

England’s defence remains unsettled heading into the match. Djed Spence is carrying a knock following the DR Congo game, which could see John Stones return to centre-back with Ezri Konsa moving to right-back.
Declan Rice, who was substituted late on with a quad issue, has said he expects to be fit to start.
Pickford will be looking for an error-free display against a Mexico side yet to concede at this tournament, with a quarter-final place and the England appearance record both at stake.
