Everton suffered a second consecutive defeat in the Opel Cup pre-season tournament on Saturday, with the Toffees losing 3-1 to Mainz following a 1-0 loss against Sevilla.
Marco Silva’s side completed two 60-minute matches against the pair on Saturday, as they continued their preparations for the 2019/20 campaign.
Looking to bounce back from the earlier loss to Sevilla, Silva made seven changes to his starting lineup for the clash against Mainz, but saw his side fall behind moments before half-time through Robin Quaison.
Mainz doubled their lead shortly after the interval with teenager Erkan Eyibil finishing off a swift break, before substitute Lewis Gibson halved the deficit from a corner moments later.
The goal sparked life into the Toffees who pushed hard for an equaliser, but they eventually ran out of ideas, and Mainz, playing in their home stadium, added third with two minutes remaining, with Quaison doubling his tally.
Here’s how we rated Everton’s performance against the Bundesliga side.
