Everton suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Sevilla on Saturday afternoon, in the first of two 60-minute pre-season friendlies in the Opel Cup in Germany.
The Toffees take on Mainz in the second hour-long friendly later on Saturday, as Marco Silva’s side continue their preparations for the 2019/20 campaign.
Sevilla started the quicker of the two sides at the Opel Arena, home to Mainz, and dominated the early phases of the game with their quick passing style.
Everton settled, however, and began to press the Spanish side much more effectively as they grew into the game.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the Toffees’ best chances of the game, but saw two efforts glance wide of Sevilla keeper Tomas Vaclik, who saved a fine headed effort from the striker late on.
Moments before, Lucas Ocampos had put Sevilla ahead from the penalty spot to win the game for the La Liga outfit, after being fouled in the area by Mason Holgate.
