Everton have made a late charge to beat title contenders Leicester City to the signing of Birmingham City starlet Demarai Gray, according to the Mirror.
The Blues have reportedly scouted the young attacker for a year and have been consistently impressed with his displays, although Leicester City are in the driving seat for the 19-year-old’s signature as it stands.
But Roberto Martinez is ready to pay the £3.7million fee placed on Gray by Birmingham and is set to give the forward a choice between Merseyside and the Midlands.
City rivals Liverpool apparently have first call on the Gray, but have opted against signing him.
Everton have been linked with a variety of attackers in the last few months and have never found a long-term replacement for the mercurial but ailing Steven Pienaar, who has been dogged by injury over the last two seasons.
But with calls by many for Martinez to sign a new goalkeeper and with Aaron Lennon and Kevin Mirallas regularly occupying the bench, is another winger really necessary?
