Everton v Espanyol – Koeman’s reign begins with a whimper

Idrissa Gueye is the complete player.

Gueye, who was the most recent acquisition by Ronald Koeman from relegated Aston Villa, was possibly the star of the show today at Goodison. He looked eager to impress, which amounted to trying to win a hero’s tackle and gave away a penalty early on in the game. However, he was unfazed and ran the game from box-to-box, winning most of his 50-50’s and being a constant outlet for Ross Barkley and John Stones to play from.

Then what does that make James McCarthy?

‘Gana’ Gueye looked all the player James McCarthy is and then some, with his passes being short, snappy wisps of the ball into the feet of Barkley and Lukaku and further forward, an absent concept to McCarthy. The Irishman’s lack of technical prowess is often overlooked due to his tremendous work rate, but now should be a time where if Koeman looks through the microscope, he will find holes all through McCarthy’s play.

John Stones hurts his defensive partners.

Look, this may be me speaking with a bit of bias, but Stones leaves his partners with so much covering to do after he is somewhere in the Park End that it results in many defensive errors with organisation. Funes Mori has looked lacklustre alongside the young Englishman, as he is expected to double his load and this results in many mistakes. However, Jagielka seems to deal with the added load much better, which then leaves Stones to produce either some magic or calamities.

Gareth Barry is timeless.

With football’s intensity seriously picking up over the Premier League era, Gareth Barry seems to glide through the sprints with class and elegance. While many are worried that age may get the best of him this season, he has produced two flawless displays in pre-season and looks all but set to carry it over to the start of the real action. He has turned into the crucial cog of the electric Everton attack.

Moshiri needs to show us he means business.

Over the years, Everton have developed a legacy of lethargy when it comes to transfer business, so much so that it’s only really worth looking at transfer rumours when ‘Deadline Day’ rolls around, because that’s the business end for Everton, quite literally. This needs to change now more than ever as other clubs flaunt their riches on high-profile players. The squad today showed us that signings are desperately needed before Spurs come to Goodison next week. We lacked quality, and that’s the barebones of it. Everton have no player who can change a game single-handedly, and that needs to be remedied. Quickly.
