Is Gylfi Sigurdsson on borrowed time?

After another disenchanting performance from Gylfi Sigurdsson against Chelsea on Sunday, some Evertonians appeared to have finally lost patience on the Icelandic international with many calling time on the record-signings tenure at Goodison Park.

Sigurdsson signed for the Toffees back in the summer of 2017 for a reported club-record £45million, under the reign of Ronald Koeman. The highly sought after playmaker, at the time, was described as Everton’s ‘key to the Champions League’ by the former Dutch boss; and not without reason.

It was the Icelandic International’s form from his time at Swansea City where he made his name, registering 22 goal involvements in 38 games in the 16/17 season; ultimately prompting Everton’s move for the player.

However, it’s safe to say Sigurdsson is yet to prove he has the ability to still hit the same heights as he once could, only managing 3 goal involvements so far this season. In fairness, this could be justified, as he has been forced to play in an unwittingly deeper or wider role on numerous occasions this season.

Despite this, it is still clear to see he has failed to present any form of quality this year, off the ball or on it. He’s been dispossessed 21 times this season, only managing an 81.28% pass completion rate. For a midfielder with his supposed talent, that just simply isn’t good enough.

It appears as though Sigurdsson has lost his connection with the fans and the club this season. His inability to be able to do the simple things has cost us on numerous occasions this term, and quite frankly, his general play has been appalling.

A player who brings so little to this team is not required, and I consider him to be surplus to requirements. His ridiculously high wages could be spent elsewhere, and his playing time could be used more wisely by allowing the likes of Tom Davies or other youthful prospects express themselves.
