Roberto Martinez has backed Aaron Lennon to get himself back into the international picture as England boss Roy Hodgson plans for the summer.
The 28-year-old will hope his recent fine form can help to revive his international career ahead of this summer’s European Championships.
Lennon has enjoyed a purple patch which has seen him score in three consecutive games – for the first time in his career. his recent form may have changed any ‘unsure heads’ following his £4million move to Goodison Park in the summer.
His impressive all-around performance against Carlisle in the FA cup, which saw him score one and assist Kone’s goal, excited Martinez which led him to start his summer recruit in the next two Premier League games where he scored in each.
Lennon, who has 21 international caps to his name, may force Hodgson’s hand if his recent form continues.
Roy Hodgson was in attendance during Saturday’s game and when ITV News asked if Lennon should make this summer’s squad, Martinez responded:
“Obviously it is not down to me. But I get the opportunity to work with Aaron day in, day out, and he is such an important player.
We all know the quality he brings – the pace, the one v one ability, the work-rate, the understanding – and that experience he has is invaluable.
There are other players in that position, but I think he is showing he can be of incredible value to any squad, and clearly for his national team, he could be a real help.
