When speaking to the clubs official site EvertonFC.com, Roberto Martinez praises Ross Barkley for his improvement so far this season.
The 21-year-old struggled last season after suffering an injury to his MCL in pre-season, which kept him out until mid-October.
But Barkley has enjoyed his start to the 2015/16 season, featuring in Everton’s Premier League and Carling Cup campaigns, whilst also being called up by Roy Hodgson to play in England’s European Qualifiers.
Praise has been high over the last week as Barkley was named as man of the match in England’s 2-0 win over Estonia and then three days later scored in a 3-0 win over Lithuania.
“I don’t think it’s just the aspect of scoring a goal – it’s the aspect of using his presence in the final third a bit more,” Martinez said.
“Clearly, scoring goals is a big part of any attacking player but in Ross’ case I have been more pleased with his overall effect in that final third; his assists, movement and the way he attracts people out of position.
“His understanding has gone to another level and he is showing an incredible maturity to make those decisions.”
With debate upon Barkley’s best position, Martinez gives his opinion where he feels Ross fits in best.
“I think his best position is on the pitch. When you have got outstanding talent, you just need to fit it in the team, he added.
“He is not just potential anymore – he is a strong footballer with incredible quality. As with any footballer, it depends who you put around him and how you want to play. But clearly, the answer is to put him anywhere on the pitch.”
Barkley has featured in the No.10 role a lot for Everton but some Evertonians prefer him to play in a deeper role – where he has been utilised for England.
He will hope to help Everton tomorrow with a win against Man Utd which will lift them into the top 4.
