Martinez casts doubt over Lukaku’s future

Roberto Martinez has discussed Romelu Lukaku’s future and hinted that the Belgian may leave the Blues in the summer.

Lukaku, 22, sent Everton through to the semi-finals of the F.A Cup with a wonderful brace over his former Club, Chelsea, but his current boss isn’t certain his star striker will stay at Goodison Park beyond this summer and told the Liverpool Echo:

“It was probably one of best pieces of quality you will see in the FA Cup. That goal is as sweet as you’re ever going to see.

In any season the only thing that matters is what happens from now until the end of the campaign.

I said many times Cristiano Ronaldo was sold by Manchester United so if Manchester United cannot keep Cristiano Ronaldo that is a sign of a modern game.

If you sell a player for those sort of amounts I think you can get the benefit of adding three or four players in your squad.

It is down to recruitment, bringing the right characters and I think we have done that for the last three years.”

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images SportMartinez paid £28million to bring Lukaku to Everton after the former Anderlecht hitman enjoyed a fruitful loan spell with the Toffeemen, and with 25 goals in 36 appearances this season, the no.10 is proving to be more than worth the outlay.

On a more positive note, Martinez discussed the future of Everton and believes with new investor Farhad Moshiri, exciting times await the Toffeemen:

We have got big projects and I’m sure that Mr Moshiri mentioned that we are going to sit down in the summer and make a decision with what the next step is with Goodison, a new ground or developing Goodison,

We want to be a Champions League club, with a winning team and that is what every Evertonian wants to do.”

The Blues are off to Wembley in April but face Arsenal next Saturday in the league at Goodison Park, and they will be hoping to rectify the poor home form that has blighted their campaign.
