Martinez: Left-back options best in the league

Roberto Martinez has claimed his left back options are the best in the Premier League.

Leighton Baines has been the first choice in recent years but due to an injury in pre-season, he has missed every game so far. This has left Bryan Oviedo and young Brendan Galloway to fill the void.

But Baines’ injury hasn’t been as bad as it was initially thought – Galloway has come into the first team and held his own. He sure doesn’t look like a 19-year-old who has only played 14 top-flight games.

The Zimbabwean-born youngster’s performances have been impressive, and he is in negotiations with the club for a new and improved contract.

Martinez told the Liverpool Echo.

Brendan Galloway is a first-team player, he is not a young player anymore,

With what he has done this season he has earned the right to be considered a starter.

At the moment, our options at left-back are as good as you are going to get in the league with Bryan Oviedo, Leighton Baines and Brendan Galloway.

Although Galloway’s impressed many so far this season, Baines will return to first team action soon which could see Galloway pushed back out.

It is going to be down to competition for places, whatever we need on the day and allowing them to fight for that position.

I don’t consider Brendan as a teenager who is just filling a role in the first team.

He has earned the right of being an important player in the first team and that’s the way I see it.

Martinez has confirmed Baines is physically fit for a return, although he isn’t mentally ready after a lengthy lay-off.

Do you agree with Martinez, do Everton have the best left back options in the league?
