Martinez to Hijack Toon’s Wijnaldum Move?

Everton are reportedly set to make a last-ditch bid to hijack Newcastle United’s move for PSV star Georgino Wijnaldum.

According to today’s De Telegraaf, Newcastle director of football Lee Charnley is currently in advanced talks over a £15 million deal for the Dutch international midfielder, however, Roberto Martinez is in the market for a new number 10, and may enter the race to sign the highly-rated 24-year-old.

De Telegraaf state that “It is highly questionable whether captain Georginio Wijnaldum will travel on Thursday to the PSV training camp in Switzerland. Newcastle United have added action to their words and are negotiating with PSV for the transfer of the midfielder.

“There is additional pressure now as Everton have their eye on Wijnaldum. The club from Liverpool are going to interfere in the battle for the PSV captain.”

Wijnaldum, who struck an impressive 18 goals in 42 appearances last season, is set to command wages in the region of £60,000. The current PSV captain has been capped 19 times by the Oranje, and is thought to have caught the eye of new Toon boss Steve McLaren while the former England boss was manager of Eredivise side FC Twente.

Newcastle are believed to be favourites for the exciting creative midfielder, with De Telegraaf suggesting that, one way or another, a deal could be wrapped up for the exciting talent in the next 24 hours.

“Given the dynamism of Newcastle United, however, a quick agreement is possible. Managing director Lee Charnley Newcastle United yesterday (Tuesday) personally travelled to the Netherlands to negotiate in the Amsterdam region with representatives of PSV.”
