  • Everton consider one-year extension as Michael Keane nears a decade at the club.
  • Moyes prioritises Keane’s experience over a risky move for injury-prone Stones.
  • Impressive form and defensive injuries have revitalised Keane’s career at Everton.

Michael Keane is approaching a decade at Everton. Signed from Burnley for £25m in 2017, the 33-year-old has made over 200 league appearances for the club, scoring 19 goals. His current deal expires this summer, but Everton are now exploring the option of offering him another one-year extension, as per SportsBoom.

David Moyes views Keane’s experience as invaluable to his squad. Despite Everton’s interest in a potential return for John Stones, the Manchester City defender’s injury record has made Moyes wary. That is one reason, coupled with the brilliant form Mihael Keane is in, why he is keen to keep the defender at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Michael Keane has his resurgence to win Moyes trust

This season, Michael Keane has played more than anyone expected. Initially seen as a fourth-choice centre-back behind Jarrad Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and Jake O’Brien, injuries have thrust him back into the spotlight. He has made 29 appearances this term, 26 of them starts, and has arguably had one of his best seasons since joining the club.

When Keane signed his one-year extension last summer, he said: “The manager wants a competitive squad and I still feel I have a lot to give.” Moyes responded: “We will need his experience and professionalism as we go forward.”

Those words have proven correct. With Branthwaite’s long-term absence and O’Brien needed at right-back, Michael Keane has been a steady presence. He has chipped in with three goals this season, maintaining his reputation as a surprisingly effective finisher.

A decade in Blue? What comes next for Michael Keane

It is understood the player would like to remain at the club beyond the end of this season. Signing a new deal would extend Keane’s stay on the blue side of Merseyside to a full decade.

Last summer, Wolves, Leeds United and Burnley were all reportedly interested in Keane, but Moyes opted to keep faith in him as a squad player. Following Branthwaite’s injury, he has once again become a key figure.

At 33, Keane provides the level of experience and leadership ideal for a backup option. Players like that aren’t easy to find on a budget, so offering another one-year extension makes sense. If Everton go on to make Europe, which looks likely, Michael Keane will provide reliable cover.

Everton are interested in John Stones, but his injury history makes any deal a risk. I believe keeping Michael Keane ensures David Moyes has a dependable, experienced defender who knows the club inside out. A decade at Everton would be a fitting reward for a player who has seen the lows and the highs, and is still standing.
