Moments In Time: Everton secure 3-0 win over Benitez’ arch-rivals

On this day in 2006, Everton continued a formidable start to the 2006/07 campaign with a 3-0 Merseyside derby win over Liverpool.

Tim Cahill gave Everton the lead with a close-range finish after 23 minutes, with Andrew Johnson added Everton’s second 12 minutes later.

The former Crystal Palace man took advantage of a mistake from Liverpool one-club man and pundit Jamie Carragher to clot home, piling misery onto the Blues’ arch-rivals.

Liverpool dominated in terms of chances and possession, but were unable to capitalise on their own creativity and Everton kept a clean sheet as a result.

To compound troubles for the Reds, Johnson completed his brace with Liverpool shot-stopper Pepe Reina struggling to contain a Lee Carnsley strike with Johnson pouncing on the rebound.

The occasion marked the Toffees’ biggest derby day win for 42 years at the time in what was a comfortable routing for a David Moyes-led Everton.

In an amusing twist, Liverpool were still under the tutelage of current Blues boss Rafa Benitez at the time, who was left red-faced after the humbling derby day defeat.

Everton fan account @thetoffees_com took to Twitter to share the highlights reel from the game as they issued a throwback to the occasion.
