Newcastle United are interested in signing Everton midfielder James Garner this summer, according to a piece by Tyneside journalist Ross Gregory.
The Magpies are believed to be monitoring the 24-year-old as they continue assessing options to strengthen Eddie Howe’s midfield ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Garner enjoyed a big season at the Hill Dickinson, establishing himself as a key figure in David Moyes’ side with his composure on the ball, work rate and tactical versatility. He was rewarded with a place in two of Thomas Tuchel’s pre-World Cup training camps.
Newcastle’s reported interest comes as the Toon looks to add greater depth and competition in central areas following their return to European football.
According to the report from Ross Gregory, Newcastle are keen on the Everton midfielder, although no formal approach or bid has yet been reported.
What it means for Everton?
Garner remains an important member of Moyes’ squad and is viewed as one of the club’s most reliable performers in midfield.
Any potential interest from Newcastle is therefore unlikely to be welcomed by Evertonians, particularly given the player’s growing influence under Moyes. They will hope the club looks to hold on to its better players and build a team around them.
With Everton entering season 2.0 at the Hill Dickinson, retaining key players will be a priority. While Newcastle’s admiration may be genuine, the Blues are under no obvious pressure to part ways with Garner, who clearly still has an important role to play in the club’s long-term plans.
