Charly Alcaraz has been rumoured with a move away from Everton, but David Moyes would be foolish to sell one of his strongest impact players.
His life at the Toffees began with a blast after bagging a goal and an assist in his first league start for them, and his winning goal on the last day of the 2024-25 season against Newcastle United spotlighted his worth as a Premier League-level midfielder.
Minutes in the first team have dwindled in recent months, with injury hampering his progress between December and April, but he featured in four of Everton’s five final league matches, although this only amounted to a combined total of 12 minutes.
It appears Moyes still has some faith in the Argentine, which is why selling him would be a poor move by the Scotsman.
Charly Alcaraz is an impactful utility player
Everton’s squad is blessed to have multiple players that have shown a capability to play in several positions on a football pitch.
The likes of James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have slotted in unorthodox areas at times, and Alcaraz is another man who can do so.
His primary position is in the number 10 role, yet the Argentine can shift to either wing when needed, as well as operating as a false nine in some instances.
But on top of his strength as a utility player, the midfielder has shown an ability to play in multiple positions because he has several stringst his game.
He his a hanful on the counter attack with bursts of pace and control, yet his physicality and aerial prowess also make him a reliable option in the middle of the park.
Events must unfold before making a decision on Charly Alcaraz
The midway point of the 2025-26 season saw Everton punished for their lack of depth, and while they did face poor luck, with Alcaraz included as one of the many absentees in this period, the club must ensure it does not happen again.
Moyes has been left in a situation where he has to sell players, so the Toffees are able to have some flexibility with recruitment in the summer.
It is a tough pill to swallow for the 63-year-old, but he would be wise to hold off on any decisions around Alcaraz’s future for the meantime, particularly considering the recent updates surrounding star winger Iliman Ndiaye.
Ideally, the Toffees are able to keep the Senegalese international, but an impressive FIFA World Cup could see his head turned by a European giant, and while this would be a loss for the Blues, they would in turn gain a nice amount of profit.
So, if Ndiaye does leave, then Moyes may not have to sell his depth players.
It is expected that futures will be decided after the World Cup, however, Alcaraz has done more than enough to make the case that he deserves to remain as an Everton player for the upcoming season.
