Sharp: Lukaku needs better service

Everton legend Graeme Sharp has said the Toffees need to play to Romelu Lukaku’s strengths and that he needs better service if he is going to continue progressing as a forward.

The big Belgian has scored seven goals in the Premier League so far this season, in what has been a pleasing return for Roberto Martinez.

However, Sharp – who netted an excellent 159 goals for Everton – has said that Lukaku’s teammates must provide the right service to the £28 million man for him to fulfil his potential for the Blues.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Sharp says,

Rom wants to be the best he can possibly be and he knows he’s got to work hard to do that and he’s got a great attitude.

We need to give him more of the service that he wants and requires.

When he was on loan at West Brom they played him perfectly, getting balls down to the side to run at defenders and I think that’s Rom at his best.

He can do a job with his back to goal but he’s not as effective but he’s great when you’ve got the ball in front of him and he’s running at goal.

Lukaku’s last five league goals have all come from Gerard Deulofeu crosses – which emphasises the fact that if the service is right; he will finish the opportunity.

Sharp continued:

Any forward relies on the people around him to create chances whether it’s Gerard Deulofeu, Ross Barkley or whoever providing the supply line. Goalscorers are goalscorers,

Rom’s always been a confident lad, he’s always been a goalscorer as long as you get the right service to him.

Confidence-wise, especially when he’s one-on-one with the goalkeeper, he’s a very, very good finisher.

Everybody has got an opinion on him but what you can’t take away from him is that he’s got a fantastic goalscoring record.

Now fully settled at Goodison Park, Lukaku has got what it takes to score as many as Graeme Sharp in a blue shirt.

The strong Belgium international is one of the Premier League’s most lethal finishers and with the right service from the likes of Deulofeu, Arouna Kone, Aaron Lennon and Ross Barkley, he can absolutely thrive as Everton’s number 10.
