Tyler Dibling has had a difficult start of life at Everton. The £35m summer signing from Southampton has made just four league starts under David Moyes. His game time has been very limited at the new home. But during the international break, the 20-year-old was given a chance to impress for England Under-21s and he took it with open arms.
Starting against Moldova at Carrow Road, Tyler Dibling completed a staggering 22 carries, made three key passes, and completed three dribbles in a 4-1 win. After the match, he spoke to Ian Abrahams and made a revealing admission about his contrasting experiences with club and country.
Tyler Dibling: ‘Carsley gives us ultimate freedom’
When asked if he feels more able to express himself with England compared to Everton, Tyler Dibling did not hold back.
“Yeah definitely,” he replied. “Cars (Lee Carsley) gives you the freedom for every player, every attacking player, you can see it on the pitch, the way we play. He gives us ultimate freedom so we can be proper creative.”
The comment will raise eyebrows at Everton. It suggests Tyler Dibling feels restricted in Moyes’ system, where tactical discipline and defensive responsibility are non-negotiable. The comments may not sit well with many at Everton. However, I think David Moyes will understand Dibling’s frustration after making a big money move.
Tyler Dibling acknowledged his club situation has been tough. “I had a good season last season, it’s been harder for me this season, not playing as many games. But, it’s all experience at the end of the day and I’m sure it will do me well in the long run.”
He added: “I haven’t had many minutes this season. It’s been tough, but when I come away, it’s good to get minutes and play in these types of games. Now I can go back to Everton and really try to push on at the end of the season and into next season.”
Tyler Dibling on learning from Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish
Despite his frustration, Dibling is making the most of his time at Everton by learning from those ahead of him.
“I think it’s hard for your game to come on when you don’t play. But I think I’ve definitely learned from Iliman Ndiaye, Jack Grealish, because they’re such good players. When you see them every day, you can take them from the game.” The English U-21 international said.
Dibling’s strong display for England Under-21s made his case strong for the next game against Brentford. Whether Moyes gives him the chance to replicate it at Everton in the remaining seven games remains to be seen. With European football in sight, the manager may be reluctant to gamble. But for a player who cost £35m, a chance needs to be given.
