Wayne Rooney’s move to DC United set to be completed tonight

Wayne Rooney is set to complete his free transfer to Major League Soccer side DC United tonight after he was given a work permit and visa, according to a report on the Daily Mail.

The Englishman is also set to make his debut for the club next month at the opening of the Audi Field Stadium, the club’s new home.

DC United will play their first match at the stadium against the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 14, with Rooney expected to be involved.

The 32-year-old has been negotiating with the MLS side for almost one month and finally, they have reached an agreement on a deal worth about £12.5m.

Rooney was considering to stay at Goodison Park under new manager Marco Silva but decided that the best thing for him and his family would be to move to the States.

Rooney came through the youth system at Everton and is following the footsteps of other English stars such as David Beckham and Frank Lampard, who also moved to the MLS towards the end of their careers.

He will sign a two-year deal with the club and already met with the club’s officials last month. The club is currently last in the Eastern Conference table of the MLS, with only two wins this campaign.
