Everton lodge bid for World Cup defender

Everton have made a bid for Borussia Monchengladbach’s Danish defender Jannik Vestergaard as they look to build on last season’s poor defensive campaign.

They face competition from fellow Premier League side Southampton, who are also keen on signing the Bundesliga player whose reputation has been growing for some time now.

The imposing central defender has been a dominant force in the Bundesliga but is thought to be keen on a move to the Premier League. The player has been linked with moves to England in the past after some impressive performances last season.

He has also played for his country’s national side on 16 occasions and is currently at the World Cup where his side are set to face Croatia in the last 16.

Everton’s defence is an ageing one with the likes of Phil Jagielka the wrong side of 30, so this could prove to be a timely signing if they can get it over the line.
