Everton defender Ashley Williams could be set to stay and fight for his place in Marco Silva’s side next season, despite speculation that he may leave Merseyside this summer.
The Wales international centre-back endured a nightmarish campaign last time out, falling out of favour with the Everton management by the end of the season.
With new boss Silva wanting two players for each position for his debut season at Goodison Park, many had suggested that the 33-year old would be moved on after two years at the club.
Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Phil Jagielka all appear to be above Williams in the pecking order, while defensive targets such as Yerry Mina and Ramy Bensebaini have been linked with an Everton switch in the last few days, seemingly suggested that Williams would soon be off.
But according to the Liverpool Echo, the former Swansea captain may yet hang around.
The Echo claim that while Williams isn’t currently in Silva’s plans, he may choose to see out the remaining 12-months on his current Everton contract, therefore forcing Silva to consider him an option.
While Everton have money to play with this summer, it has been suggested that the club can’t afford to wantonly throw it around, and should they fail to get Williams off the books it seems unlikely that they’ll heavily invest in yet another centre-half.
