Everton favourite Duncan Ferguson believes the Blues need either an upgrade on Thierno Barry or greater support for the striker as David Moyes considers his attacking options.
Big Dunc discussed Barry during an interview with BBC Sport Merseyside, with Everton’s lack of alternatives at centre-forward becoming an increasingly obvious issue.
Big Dunc gives verdict on Everton striker situation
Speaking to BBC Sport Merseyside, Big Dunc said Everton need an “upgrade or support” for Barry.
It was not a case of the former Everton striker simply writing Barry off. His comments instead point towards the need for greater competition and depth in a position where Moyes currently has very few senior options.
Barry was left as Everton’s only recognised senior centre-forward following the summer transfer window. That has placed plenty of responsibility on him, while leaving Moyes with little scope to change the focal point of his attack when games demand something different.
Big Dunc knows more than most about carrying that responsibility at Everton. He scored more than 70 goals across his two spells with the club before later returning as a coach, including a memorable spell as caretaker manager.
His comments come with attention already beginning to turn towards January. Everton remain short of numbers in several areas, but the lack of another established centre-forward is difficult to ignore.
There is still plenty of time for Barry to make his mark and Big Dunc’s comments should not be treated as a verdict on his Everton career. But relying on one senior striker was always a gamble, and bringing in genuine competition would give Moyes an attacking option he simply does not have at present.
