Everton’s problems cannot simply be reduced to whether David Moyes should remain as manager, according to journalist Ian Croll.
In an interesting post on X, Croll argued that long-term success at Everton will depend on recruitment, leadership and a clear football strategy as much as the identity of the manager. His comments come after successive 2-0 Premier League defeats against Chelsea and Arsenal increased scrutiny of Moyes and his side.
Everton face questions beyond David Moyes
Moyes will inevitably carry responsibility for performances and results, but the bigger picture extends beyond the dugout. Everton have undergone substantial change since his return and are still trying to establish themselves after years of instability. Recruitment is part of that discussion. The squad was reshaped during the summer, but Everton finished the window short of options in some areas, most notably at centre-forward.
There has also been significant change behind the scenes. Everton moved away from a traditional director of football model following Kevin Thelwell’s departure, with responsibilities divided across a new football leadership structure. That operation will ultimately be judged on whether Everton recruit sustainably, develop players and give the manager a squad capable of progressing.
There is also renewed uncertainty at ownership level. The Friedkin Group announced this month that it is exploring new investment options, including the possible sale of a controlling interest in the club. Croll’s point therefore comes at an interesting moment. Changing the manager can alter results, but Everton’s longer-term direction will also depend on recruitment, leadership and decisions made above him.
The challenge is not simply getting the right man in the dugout. It is making sure the structure around him works.
