Leeds United are in talks to sign Pennington on loan

Leeds are confirmed to be in talks with Everton over a prospective loan deal for defender Matthew Pennington, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The 23-year old centre-back has interested a trio of Championship clubs, but it is believed that Pennington prefers a move to Elland Road, having spent last season on loan in West Yorkshire.

Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic are also interested, but Leeds are the club firmly in the driving seat.

Pennington played 24 times for Leeds in the Championship last season, and is wanted as cover ahead of the coming season. Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson are expected to lead the Whites’ back-line, but Pennington is seen as a solid squad player.

Despite a mixed season where form and injury’s caused his game time to fluctuate, the former England Under-19 international is familiar with Thorp Arch and is expected to link up with new boss Marcelo Bielsa.

Pennington was offered a new deal towards the end of last season, contracting him to the Blues until 2021. While he doesn’t feature in Marco Silva’s plans for the upcoming season, Everton aren’t willing to cash in just yet.
