Silva says Lookman must fight for his place

Everton boss Marco Silva says club starlet Ademola Lookman must fight for a place in his squad if he wants to be successful.

The England Under-21 international was left out of the Toffees’ match-day squad against Wolves last weekend, and Silva has admitted that the player isn’t happy at the club.

It has been well reported that RB Leipzig are interested in re-signing Lookman this summer after he enjoyed a successful six-month loan spell at the club from last January, and Lookman is said to be keen on a move there too.

Rumours had suggested that Lookman had refused to travel to Wolverhampton last weekend in a bid to force through a move, with the German transfer window still open, but Silva dismissed the rumour.

The Portuguese coach has repeatedly stressed that Lookman is an Everton player and is wanted in the squad this season – but he must earn his place.

Talking ahead of tomorrow’s game against Southampton, as reported by the Daily Star, Silva had this to say on Lookman’s situation:

Lookman knows very well why he wasn’t in the squad last week. It was a technical decision and he knows very well why. But I can tell you he has trained very well this week and responded how I wanted him to.

Even if he’s not really happy he has to be in the future and it is a matter of him fighting for what he wants in his career.

In this moment he is our player, I am happy to keep him as our player, and now it is up to him to fight for his position, for a place in the starting XI and in our squad list as well.
