West Ham name price for Cresswell – Would an Everton bid be worth it?

West Ham have named their price for reported Everton target Aaron Cresswell, but would doing a deal for the full-back be worth it?

Football Insider reported earlier this week that the England international left-back was on Everton’s radar, with the club reportedly on the look-out for a new left sided defender this summer.

While Lucas Digne’s spot isn’t in any doubt, Leighton Baines is out of contract this summer and with neither the club nor Baines having weighed in on the veteran’s future, it is unclear who Digne’s back-up will be come the opening day of the upcoming season.

Now according to Football Insider, the Hammer’s have slapped an £8million price tag on Cresswell, after the 29-year old fell behind Arthur Masuaku in the pecking order last season, with manager Manuel Pellegrini keen to listen to offers for the full-back.

For such a low fee, Cresswell wouldn’t be the worst of signings this summer if Everton are looking to improve their options. Cresswell started 18 Premier League games last season, and would add depth to Marco Silva’s squad.

However, it is unlikely that Cresswell would want to move away from the London Stadium to sit on the bench once more, and he certainly isn’t in a position to uproot Lucas Digne from the starting line-up.

At 29-years old, the former Ipswich Town man also wouldn’t be one for the future, and would only be a short-term fix for a position that could do with a longer-term occupant. United States international Antonee Robinson would be a better option, with the 21-year old having spent the last two seasons on loan in the Championship with Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic respectively.

With plenty of other positions in need of strengthening this summer, it wouldn’t be in Everton’s best interests to sign a left-back, when they could save money by tying Baines down for another year or by simply promoting Robinson into the first-team.
