Everton consider McCarthy as Zaha makeweight, but is he the right player to offer?

Everton would consider including James McCarthy in a prospective deal for Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha, but would he be the right player to offer?

The Telegraph reported last night that the Toffees were set to offer Palace a cash-plus-player deal for Ivory Coast international Zaha, with £60million being the touted fee alongside Turkey international Cenk Tosun.

The former Besiktas striker struggled to impress on Merseyside last season and subsequently fell down the pecking order, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison preferred to start up front, leading many to predict his departure this summer.

However according to a report from talkSPORT, Everton would also consider sending Ireland international McCarthy to the Eagles, with the London club having previously registered an interest in the midfielder.

The 28-year old enforcer has fallen out of favour at Goodison Park in recent times, having had his appearances restricted in recent years due to a string of injuries, with the most well known being a double leg break he suffered against West Brom 18 months ago.

Now fit and ready to play, McCarthy couldn’t force his way into Marco Silva’s plans last season, and following the signing of Fabian Delph from Manchester City it is unlikely he will earn his place back now.

Personally I’d much rather see Everton include McCarthy over Tosun. While McCarthy was instrumental for the club at a time, forming the lynchpin midfield duo with Gareth Barry under Roberto Martinez, he is far from that now.

McCarthy’s presence has hardly been felt in the last few years, such has his lack of appearances been. Meanwhile Tosun could still come around, although if the right replacement emerged I wouldn’t be against seeing him leave too.

In a world where we want to keep the strongest squad imaginable at Goodison Park, I would much rather sacrifice McCarthy in order to bring Zaha to the club than I would see Tosun make way.
