Everton linked with move for a Man United defender – should Blues push for a transfer?

Now that Manchester United have completed the signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester City, The Red Devils could look to let one of their current central defenders leave and Joe Bernstein of The Mail is tipping Everton to potentially make a move for one of them, but should the Blues pursue such a deal?

Bernstein suggests that one of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones or Marcos Rojo may be for sale and that Everton could make a move for one of them if they’re unable to sign Kurt Zouma from Chelsea.

Zouma spent last season on loan at Goodison Park and the Blues are keen to sign him again but new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard knows that his club is currently under a transfer ban and as such, he would not be able to sign a replacement for Zouma if he did let him leave.

Therefore, the Frenchman could end up staying at Stamford Bridge, meaning that Everton will need to look elsewhere for a defender.

Having lost Phil Jagielka from last season’s squad, and with Zouma potentially staying at Chelsea, the trio of Jones, Rojo and Smalling are certainly interesting options.

However, injuries have clouded both Jones and Rojo in recent years, whilst Smalling’s performance level has been up and down.

If Everton can’t sign Zouma, I believe that they’d be better off looking elsewhere rather than taking on one of the United trio, all of whom would be risky signings.
