Digne believes Everton can crack top six this season – Is he right?

Lucas Digne believes that Everton are more than capable of breaking through into the top six this season, claiming there is nothing to stop the club.

Since Leicester City won the Premier League title in 2016, a group six teams have created a min-league of sorts at the top of the table, with entry into that group largely considered ironclad, with clubs below it unable to compete financially and in the transfer market.

In the final two months of last season, The Toffees went on a strong run of results against members of the Top Six, beating Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United, while drawing with Liverpool and Tottenham, claiming 11 points from a possible 15.

Losing just one of their final eight games last campaign, and having strenghtened considerably this season, defender Digne spoke to Sky Sports about the club’s ambitions going forward, as Everton look to continuing growing season upon season. Digne said:

We have a big ambition this year. We are building something.

We started last year with some new players and now we have [more] new players coming in. They help us.

We are building something to be better and better. I think we can do something this year.

Every time the team changes and it is good for competition. They put a lot of competition inside the team. And we can do better with them.

Digne also said that the club are optimistic that they can built upon the positive framework of last season, saying:

Of course. When you look at last season, we finished well and we played well against the biggest teams.

I think we can do something this year. If we start better than last year maybe we can finish up.

It is important to win at home and build a fortress at Goodison because it is our stadium. It is an amazing place to play.

Whether Everton will break that top six or not this season, it is imperative that be seen the determination from the players. If the club and the players have the desire and will to do so, Everton will automatically be in a more advantageous position.

That being said, I’m doubtful as to whether the club can do it. However if they ever could do it, this season is as good as any.
